THE BIBLE AND BIG CATS LAUNCH DEVON BOOK COMPANY

A new range of books specifically covering rural Devonshire is being launched.

CFZ Press was originally formed in 1995 as the publishing arm of the Centre for Fortean Zoology — the world's largest cryptozoological organisation. We are now the market leader in books and magazines on mystery animals, and in the Summer of 2005 to celebrate our tenth anniversary, we have launched a series of books specialising in Rural Devonshire.

The first two are released on Monday 25th July.

Granfer’s Bible Stories” by John Downes

John Downes (80), a church-man all his life, is the author of A Dictionary of Devon Dialect (Tabb House, 1986). About seven years ago he began interpreting the Bible stories in the Devonshire vernacular, each story being told by an old Devon Grandfather - ‘Granfer’. These stories are now collected together in a remarkable book. `Granfer` treats the well-known biblical characters as if they were simple country folk living in the next village. Many of the stories are treated with a degree of bucolic humour and kindly irreverence, which not only gives the reader an opportunity to re-evaluate familiar tales in a new light, but do so in both an entertaining and a spiritually uplifting manner.

While the Cat’s Away” by Chris Moiser

Over the past thirty years or so there have been numerous sightings of large exotic cats, including black leopards, pumas and lynx, in the South West of England. Former Rhodesian soldier Sam McCall moved to North Devon and became a farmer and pub owner when Rhodesia became Zimbabwe in 1980. Over the years despite many of his pub regulars having seen the “Beast of Exmoor” Sam wasn’t at all sure that it existed. Then a series of happenings made him change his mind. Chris Moiser, is a zoologist and a former lecturer at a College of Further Education. He has written several small books on the subject of British mystery cats, but this is his first novel. With a wry smile he admits that some of the events in this book actually took place, but he refuses to say which!

The book will be officially launched to the press on 4th August 2005, at a small reception in rural North Devon. You are invited to join us as we launch the first two titles of Devonshire books, as well as the first scientific book on dragons since 1884. Meet the authors in a relaxed rural setting
